Words we use in making soap!

ACTIVATED CHARCOAL– Highly absorptive that removes impurities from the skins surface and can also help alleviate infections. We use it in soap for its detox, exfoliants and cleansing properties.

ALCOHOL-A distilled beverage that can make one drunk. When used in soap making, with heat the aclohol is burned off, we have found after this process it leaves a very mild pleasant scent.

AVOCADO OIL– Rich in vitamins A, D, & E as well as amino acids and protein. Wonderfully moisturizing and excellent for anyone with extremely sensitive skin.

ALMOND OIL: Almond oil can make hair stronger and less prone to split ends, which means your hair growth won’t be slowed by losing hair that becomes damaged. Almond oil contains high amounts of vitamin E, which is a natural antioxidant.

ARGAN OIL– Traditionally used as a treatment for skin diseases and as a cosmetic oil for skin and hair Argan oil is advocated as moisturizing oil, against juvenille acne and flaking of the skin as well as for nourishing the hair. Used in our hair, skin and beard products.

BAKING SODA- A salt composed of sodium and bicarbonate ions. Used in bath bombs, deodorants and face soaps.

BEE POLLEN-Bee pollen contains many vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Studies have linked bee pollen and its compounds to health benefits such as decreased inflammation, as well as improved wound healing.

BEESWAX– A natural protectant, skin healer, softener and antibacterial. We make every effort to use beewax from our every own beehives!

BEER/ALE- An ingredient found in beer, known for its relaxing properties . Hops contains poly-phenols thought to account for its anti-bacterial and perservative effects (beers long life) and it also contains skin-softening amino acids.

BENTONITE CLAY– Known for drawing dirt & impurities from the hair without stripping its natural oils, clay has properties that are known to be healing and stimulating to the hair shaft and scalp, since it’s rich in mineral and nutrients.

BOTANICAL(s)-a substance obtained from a plant and used as an additive

CALENDULA OIL– A common herbal oil remedy for treating skin conditions.

CASTOR OIL- Soothing and lubricating, rich in fatty acids, acts as a humectant to draw moisture to the skin and hair.

CINNAMON– Is beneficial to the skin because it brings blood and nutrients to the skin surface while also helping to dry skin; it’s a scalp cleanser, acne, and eczema treatment. We also us it as a decorative touch in some bars.

CITRIC ACID– A natural preservative/conservative, it can slough off dead skin cells and speed new cell turnover. The latter promotes new skin growth that can help alleviate the appearance of age spots, acne scars, small wrinkles and areas of uneven tone and texture.

COCOA BUTTER– Recommended for prevention of stretch marks in pregnant women, treatment of chapped or burned skin and lips, and as a daily moisturizer to prevent dry, itchy skin.

COCOA POWDER– Studies show that the flavanols from cocoa can improve blood flow to the skin and protect it against sun-induced damage. We use this as a natural colorant in some of our soaps.

COCONUT OIL– Emollient and healing, used in soaps to produce a big fluffy lather.

COFFEE– finely ground coffee beans can rid the skin of dry, dead skin cells and restore it to a more radiant and smooth appearance. Used in place or an addition to water, it produces a beautiful brown colored soap and we also use it for decoration on top of some of our soaps!

COLD PROCESS SOAP MAKING-This is a method of producing soap that requires no extra heat to create the soap – it is therefore ‘cold’ – with no extra heat being applied to the process. An exothermic heat reaction between the ingredients takes place, causing internal heat to be generated, leaving you with a block of soap. Saponification takes about 18 to 24 hours to complete.

CHLOROPHYLL– Supports the natural blood-cleansing process. It is known to help cleanse the body and maintain the action of the circulatory, intestinal, and female reproductive systems, it helps protect and support healthy cells and promotes the elimination of toxins from the body. In addition, it neutralizes normal body odors and acts as a natural, “internal” deodorant. Used in place or an addition to water, it produces a beautiful natural green colored soap.

CURE-Cold process soap needs to cure for four to six weeks. During this time the water used in the recipe evaporates. Cured soap has a firmer texture and lasts longer in the shower. We also cure our hot process soap as well to facilate a harder bar of soap,

DEAD SEA CLAY- Dead Sea minerals is almost instantly effective in improving the skin’s natural processes, easing rheumatic pains, relaxing muscles, and providing inner calmness and tranquility.

ESSENTIAL OILS– Fragrant natural botanical extracts that possess many healing properties on both the physical and emotional levels, used in the ancient art and science of aromatherapy.

FRAGRANCE OIL– Also known as perfum, also known as aroma oils, aromatic oils, and flavor oils, are blended synthetic aroma compounds or natural essential oils that are diluted. Fragrance oil we use are Phthalate Free.

GOAT MILK-Goat milk contains alpha-hydroxy acids, such as lactic acid, which help remove dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. This natural and gentle exfoliation reveals fresh, new skin cells that are healthier, smoother and younger looking. Alpha-hydroxy acids are effective exfoliators because they break down the bonds that hold the dead skin cells together. Goat milk contains a variety of vitamins but is particularly high in Vitamin A. Vitamin A is necessary for the body to repair damaged skin tissue and maintain healthy skin. Goat milk hydrates your skin on multiple levels and won’t dry it out like commercially available soaps.

HEMP OIL- Known for moisturizing and soothing skin conditions Hemp seed oil also offers other benefits such as relief of acne, minor abrasions, psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema, and itchy skin. The oil also strengthens the skin and enhances its ability to resist viral, fungal, and bacterial infections.

HONEY– Filtered effective emollient, healing, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, as well as vital nutrients for the skin. ALL of the honey and wax that we use in our soaps, are from our every own Beehives!

HOT PROCESS SOAP MAKING -Soap making using an external heat source is used to accelerate saponification. The external heat source can be a crock pot, a double boiler or the oven. Saponification will be complete in approximately 2 hours.

JOJOBA OIL- Found In particular, such products commonly containing jojoba are lotions and moisturizers, hair shampoos and conditioners. Or the pure oil itself may be used on skin, hair, or cuticles.

LANOLIN– A fat like substance obtained from sheep’s wool, although it is a wax. Known to be effective in softening dry, cracked, chapped skin. It is easily absorbed and lays down a protective barrier therefore holding moisture in.

LARD-100 % animal fat (usually pork) that has been separated from the meat. Most lard is made through a process called rendering, whereby the fatty parts of the pig (such as the belly, butt, and shoulder) are cooked slowly until the fat is melted. Alabama Hill Soap and Honey rarely uses lard in our soap reciepes.

MADDER ROOT- Well known for healing skin rashes, irritations, acne, boils, and other irritations of the skin. It can be used topically when made into a paste and applied to the area.

MEADOWFOAM OIL-The plant also goes by the botanical name Limnanthes alba.This oil is extracted from the seeds of the white, flowering meadowfoam plant native to Oregon, California, and Western Canada. It acts as an emollient, sealing in moisture and keeping the skin soft and supple.  Meadowfoam oil’s unique chemical structure has the potential to moisturize your hair and skin without leaving a greasy feeling behind. We love meadowfoam oil and use this amazing oil in most of our cold and hot process soap receipes.

MELT AND POUR-Melt and pour soap is a ready-made soap base composed of fatty acids, glycerin, and other natural ingredients. The base is produced through the “saponification” process, which involves mixing fats and an alkali (such as lye).

MICA-Contains Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxide, Silica. Mica dust in the workplace is regarded as a hazardous substance for respiratory exposure above certain concentrations. Mica is used in the cosmetic and soap industries as a colorant. When we use mica – as a colorant, we always wear face masks and shields.

OAT/OATMEAL– Oats contain polysaccharides, which become gelatinous in water and leave a fine protective film on the skin, preventing dull, flaky dryness. It is moisturizing are full of healthy, lubricating fats. It is also pore cleansing that gently remove dirt and oil from the pores. In essense oats/oatmeal is cleansing, moisturizing, and reducing inflammation.

OAT OIL-Avena Sativa Oil leaves skin feeling hydrated all day long. It’s rich in fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamin E.

OAT MILK FLOUR – this is an plant-based protein, which contains B vitamins and minerals. Its possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties help to treat dry skin and remove dead skin cells. Oats also contain compounds called saponins, which are natural cleansers. They remove the dirt and oil that clog the pores and exfoliate the skin.

OLIVE OIL- Olea europaea-used extensively in skincare for centuries, high in monounsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant, and a superior moisturizer, used to nourish and protect the skin and to combat the effects of aging, draws moisture to the skin while allowing normal skin functions to take place, one of the very best oils for natural skin care; we only use cold pressed and/or organic oils.

PALM OIL-Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Oil, Palm oil is a form of vegetable oil obtained from the fruit of the oil palm tree. It is full of antioxidants has a cleansing ability to remove oils from the skin and protect pores from dirt and infection. It is a great moisturizer, hydrates and protect skin. It has lathering agents and also contribute to a hard bar of soap. The palm oil that we use here to make our soaps is sustainability sourced with an membership in RSPO.

PALM KERNEL OIL (PKO)– Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Kernel Oil. Palm kernel oil is used to make a white-coloured, harder bar of soap that provides a fluffy, bubbly lather. This oil is high in lauric, myristic, and palmitic acids which will produce a hard, cleansing bar with a full lather.

POTASIUM HYDROXIDE- an inorganic compound with the formula KOH and is commonly called caustic potash. KOH is noteworthy as the precursor to most soft and liquid soaps, as well as numerous potassium-containing chemicals. We use this in our soap making for shaving and liquid soap.

PUMICE- Pumice bar soap contains volcanic rock and is an excellent natural abrasive, exfoliating dead skin and scrubbing skin clean from dirt, tar, paint, grease, oil, ink, and adhesives.

ROUNDTABLE ON SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL (RSPO) – is an organization that works to advance the production, procurement, finance, and use of sustainable palm oil in products used all over the world. When we use palm oil in our soap receipes, we only use RSPO palm oil.

SAPONICATION-is a process that involves the conversion of fat, oil, or lipid, into soap and alcohol by the action of aqueous alkali. Soaps are salts of fatty acids, which in turn are carboxylic acids with long carbon chains.

SEA SALT – It contains 84 elements and minerals found naturally in the human body which are essential to good health, used as a treatment for psoriasis, eczema, acne, and general good health. relieves muscle tension, soothes, and softens the skin.

SEAWATER – Seawater can act as a salt water detox. The salt absorbs and can draw impurities out of your skin. When used as an exfoliating agent, it acts as a cleanser to rejuvenate your skin tone. Salt water benefits for skin also include tightening pores, leaving your skin feeling fresh and bright. It also can increase blood circulation, and allows your skin to better absorb moisturizers and other treatments.

SHEA BUTTER– Butyrospermum parkii- Extracted from the kernels of a wild African tree, shea butter is an excellent emollient with great healing properties. High in triglycerides and fatty acids, its soft butter texture melts easily into the skin. Traditionally used by.s people for burns, wounds, sunburn, muscles aches and as a moisturizing beauty aid for hair and skin

SHOREA (SAL) BUTTER-Rich in Stearic and Oleic fatty acids, Shorea (Sal) Butter is an excellent conditioner for skin and hair restoring softness and elasticity. Shorea (Sal) Butter is considered to have high levels of uniform triglycerides which are known to assist with oxidation and can help stabilize formulations. Shorea (Sal) Butter is also very popular in lotion bars due to the high levels of stearic and oleic fatty acids. 

SODIUM HYDROXIDE- Also known as lye is traditionally obtained by leaching wood ashes, used in natural soap production. It’s also used as a cleansing agent. We use this in our cold process and hot process soap making.

SUNFLOWER OIL– This oil adds a bit of hardness and creamy lather to your bar. It also creates a more stable lather, it is conditioning, and leaves a silky feel to soap. Sunflower oil contains essential fatty acids and vitamin E, so it feels moisturizing on the skin. 

ROSE CLAY– also a great exfoliant for the skin, it reduces irritation, increases circulation, regenerates collagen, promotes new cell growth for skin, and regenerates elasticity within the skin.

TALLOW-This is rendered form of beef or mutton fat, primarily made up of triglycerides. Alabama Hill Soap and Honey rarely uses tallow in our soap reciepes.

TAMANU OIL– Tamanu oil is extracted from seeds that grow on a tropical evergreen called a tamanu nut tree. Tamanu oil a been used medicinally for hundreds of years by certain Asian, African, and Pacific Island cultures. It has a lightweight and moisturizing consistency that absorbs quickly into the skin. It’s also packed with essential fatty acids.

TITANIUM DIOXIDIE-Also known as titanium (IV) oxide or titania, is the inorganic compound with the chemical formula TiO ₂. It is used in many food and cosmetic products to improve their white color and block ultraviolet ray. In soap, lotions and creams, it presents low risk of exposure. However, when TiO2 is inhalable—as it may be in powders—it is considered a possible carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. While we do use titanium dioxidie sometimes, we use it sparingly and will clearly identify its use on our ingredients label.

TURMERIC- Is an excellent exfoliating agent and helps take care of the scars and inflammation but also reduce oil secretion by sebaceous glands, it also helps with stretchmarks, burns, facial hairs, cracked heels, ect.

ZINC OXIDE- This has a high thermal conductivity, binding, antibacterial and UV-protection properties. Additionally, is widely used to treat a variety of other skin conditions, in products such as baby powder, creams to treat diaper rash and can also be found in antiseptic ointments.

WALNUT (CRUSHED)– natural colorant and scrubs away dirt, oil, and dead skin.

WATER-a colorless, transparent, odorless liquid that forms the seas, lakes, rivers, and rain and is the basis of the fluids of living organisms. Used in the process of making cold and hot process soap.

VANILLIA (CRUSHED)– natural colorant and scrub away dirt, oil, and dead skin.
